With more of us working remotely, creating a comfortable and productive home office has become essential. While skipping traffic and working in cozy clothes can be a perk, a poorly planned space can hurt your focus, productivity, and even your posture.
Whether you’re setting up a new workspace or giving your current office a refresh, here are five key things to consider:
1. Choose the Right Spot
Ideally, you want a space that separates work from home life—even if it’s just a small corner. A spare room with a door is best, but if that’s not an option, carve out a quiet nook, an unused closet, or even a hallway landing. Avoid high-traffic areas if possible.
2. Prioritize Lighting
Natural light is a game-changer for both productivity and mood. Try to set up near a window. If that’s not possible, invest in layered lighting: a mix of overhead, task, and ambient lighting. Make sure your desk area is well-lit to reduce eye strain during long work sessions.
3. Invest in a Comfortable Chair
Your chair is arguably the most important piece of home office furniture. Prolonged sitting in the wrong chair can lead to back and neck pain. Choose one with ergonomic support and adjustable features—or, if you’re like me and enjoy sitting cross-legged from time to time, consider a chair with a wider seat and flexible design that allows for that. If you can, test it out before buying—or look for one with great reviews.

4. Control Clutter
A clean desk can lead to a clear mind. Use organizers for pens, paper clips, and office supplies, and consider a simple filing system (even a few labeled baskets or folders can do the trick). Try to keep only the essentials on your desktop and tuck the rest away.
5. Make It Inspiring
Your workspace should reflect your personality and spark joy. Consider painting the walls a color that energizes or calms you. Hang art, shelves, add a plant, or display a favorite quote. Even small design touches can help you feel more motivated and at home in your space.
